in the book To Kill A MockingBird by Harper Lee, the was a great injustice served in chapter twenty four in regards to Tom Robison's death. As Atticus explained, Tom had given up hope and one day during their exercise period he made a run for it to the gate and began to climb. As he was climbing he was shot seventeen times by the police. Being shot seventeen times is a great injustice since no one deserves to be shot that many times in regardless of the situation. When Atticus explains all of this to Aunt Alexandra and Calpurnia he says, "what was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of 'em? He wasn't Tom to them he was an escaping prisoner"(235). The quote shows that the guard of the prisoner think very little of the prisoners in the facility as they shoot them without hesitation when trying to escape. One can infer that the guards didn't care about Tom's life as they shot him instantly seventeen times. As I was reading this I wondered f the guards would have reacted differently if the escaping prisoner was white. From the society in Maycomb I predict that if it was a white person trying to escape they would have had some hesitation in killing him and might not have shot him at all.
Also in chapter twenty five, Miss Maudie, Aunt Alexandra, and Scout cover up what happened to Tom and don't tell the rest of the ladies at the party of what just happened to Tom Robison and the prison incident. Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie act as though nothing happen ad resume to the party as if everything in the world is alright. The guest of the party have no idea and go around blind to what is going on outside of the party. I connected the strategy of protecting others to the world today. People today protect other people from the truth and don't reveal to them what is actually going on. The think that be not telling the truth will make other people's lives better and more easier. Although it does make life seem more simpler by not knowing what is going on in today's society and the problem that are at stake in today's world will ultimately hurt that person later on. If they never find out they will never be able to do something about it and try to improve the situation. They will also be living a lie and when they eventually find out it might be too much to take in at once since they have allows perceived the world as being certain way. By changing their view on the world and showing them what it is really like can be devastating. When Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie and Scout return to the party Scout, " They went, down the row of laughing women, around the dinning room, refilling coffee cups, dishing out goodies as though their only regret was the temporary domestic disaster of losing Calpurnia"(237).
