This is a good symbol of Crooks because he seems to have lost a sense of purpose and strength to try and make a better life for himself. The low battery is a symbol of having near to nothing left, which is probably how Crooks feels after being treated as less than all of the white people on the farm. As a child, Crooks explained how he played with the other white child and had a good time. During this part of his life, Crooks may have had a full supply of hopes and dreams for the future, but over time, the racial discrimination of the time period has sucked the life out of him.
